Frequently Asked Questions

Firewood that has been subjected to a drying process in a kiln, which is a type of oven or furness. The purpose of kiln drying is to reduce the moisture content of the firewood to a secific level, typically around10-20%.

The type of wood you should choose depends on several factors, including the specific characteristics you're looking for and the purpose for which you'll be using the firewood.

If the wood is for an indoor fireplace, we recommend using hardwoods such as; oak, ash, and birch due to their properties which provide a longer, hotter burn, desirable for heating purposes.

If the wood is for cooking purposes, fruitwoods such as apple, cherry, pecan, and alder. These woods will help provide a variety of different seasonings and pleasant aromas. However, due to their burn time and heat output, these woods are not recommended as the sole source of firewood for indoor heating.

To light your firewood, follow these steps for a successful fire:

  1. Prepare the fire by clearing it of debris and ensuring good ventilation.
  2. Place BURN Firewood kindling on the fire for ignition.
  3. Arrange the firewood, leaving gaps for airflow, and create a crisscross pattern with the kindling in the centre.
  4. Ignite the fire by lighting the kindling using a match or lighter. Ensure the flame catches the kindling.
  5. Add more firewood once the kindling is burning well, and leave gaps between the logs for successful airflow.
  6. Monitor the fire, adding more firewood as needed to maintain the desired heat. Use fireplace tools to rearrange the logs.

Firewood should be dry before using it for burning. The recommended moisture content for firewood is typically around 10-20%. Dry firewood is important for efficient burning which will produce more heat, reduce smoke and emissions, and reduce creosote buildup.

The main difference between hard and soft firewood lies in the type of tree species from which they are derived and their respective characteristics.

Hardwoods such as oak, beech, and ash are denser and heavy which allows them to produce more heat when burned and provide a longer-lasting fire.

Softwoods such as pine, cedar, and fir are the cheaper option and are generally easier to ignite due to their low density and higher resin content. They can also provide pleasant aromas, especially coniferous trees such as pine and cedar. However, the burn time and heat output isn't as effective in comparison to the hardwood species.

Seasoned firewood refers to wood that has been dried to reduce its moisture content before being used for burning. Seasoning is the process of allowing freshly cut wood to naturally dry and loose moisture overtime, typically through exposure to air and sunlight.

Kiln-dried firewood offers several benefits:

  1. Lower moisture content: Kiln-drying reduces the moisture content to a specific level, typically between 10 and 20%. This ensures efficient burning and a cleaner, hotter fire.
  2. Easy ignition: This Ignites quickly and easily due to its low moisture content. This makes it easier to start a fire, especially in outdoor environments.
  3. Consistent heat: Kiln-dried firewood ensures a consistent heat output. The controlled drying process allows a uniform moisture reduction, leading to a more even burn.
  4. Clean burning: Less smoke, emissions, and creosote buildup. It promotes cleaner burning and better air quality.
  5. Pest Control: Kiln drying significantly reduces pests like insects that may be present in the wood, ensuring you don't introduce unwanted pests into your home.
  6. Convenience and storage: It is always delivered ready to burn and the moisture content helps prevent mold growth and extends its shelf life in storage.

While kiln-dried logs are generally more resistant to moisture compared to seasoned, air-dried firewood, we would still recommend storing the logs in an indoor, low-humidity environment such as a garage. However, if you don't have any indoor space, an outdoor log store is also a good option.
